Tena Koutou Katoa

TURANGAWAEWAE: As part of our Inquiry Unit we are building a Waharoa - please feel welcome to visit us and watch it grow. We acknowledge the tangata whenua through the Awa and Maunga. We have each created a fish that is swimming in the Awa. This is based on the book, Only One You by Linda Kranz.

Ko Taupiri te Maunga.

Ko Waikato te Awa.

Ko Tongariro te Maunga.

Ko Taupo-nui-a-tea te Roto.

PAANUI: We have begun our reading programme. This includes guided reading, shared reading and our teacher reading to us. Here we are being Tuakana/Teina and supporting our classmates in their reading.

TURANGAWAEWAE: We have created maps of special places in our school and included grids, compass roses, and map keys. To make our maps look older like Te Tiriti O Waitangi we tore the edges off and stained our maps with coffee. We also shared our maps with our class and are learning how to be a good audience.

TURANGAWAEWAE: We are learning about the environment around us and looking at special places in our school. Today we looked at our beautiful Waharoa and sketched snapshots of the carvings. Our Waharoa has many different images with different representations.

Welcome to our Whanau 18 Blogg. We hope you enjoy following us on our journey of learning. We have started with a SPLASH and are really enjoying the chance to learn new skills in the swimming pool.

Welcome to Term 4

Welcome back to Room 20! 

I hope everyone enjoyed their break and are feeling refreshed. We have a busy term of fun and learning ahead of us. 
Don't forget everyone needs to have their hat with them - no hat, then play in the shade! (Although, there are some spare hats available in class).

Electric Future

Electric Future

First, we explored what energy is and where it comes from. We looked at renewable and non-renewable resources. 

We learnt that renewable energy comes from sources that can be replaced. Electricity is our most widely used form of energy.

Then we tested some solar cars in different places:inside, outside, in bright light and in the shade. We found the solar car only moved in bright light and slowed/stopped when in shade/dark places!

Next through some hands on trial and error we learnt how to make an electrical circuit using a battery, wires, and LEDs. 

Some of the class then went on to power a buzzer using copper and zinc nails. 

We found it only worked when there was salt in the water and the metals were different.
