Electric Future

Electric Future

First, we explored what energy is and where it comes from. We looked at renewable and non-renewable resources.

We learnt that renewable energy comes from sources that can be replaced. Electricity is our most widely used form of energy.

Then we tested some solar cars in different places:inside, outside, in bright light and in the shade. We found the solar car only moved in bright light and slowed/stopped when in shade/dark places!

Next through some hands on trial and error we learnt how to make an electrical circuit using a battery, wires, and LEDs.

Some of the class then went on to power a buzzer using copper and zinc nails.

We found it only worked when there was salt in the water and the metals were different.

Magnetic Madness

Takahe hub have been enjoying spending Thursday and Friday afternoons enjoying the wonders of science - aided by science boxes ordered from the House of Science. The science boxes are filled with a variety of resources and shared between schools.

During our first science unit Magnetic Madness we enjoyed exploring the properties of magnets, then we predicted and tested which materials magnets were attracted to. We then recorded and compared our results.

Next we tested the strength of different sized magnets.

Then we made a compass.

Magnetic Madness

Magnets all have a south and a north side. If you put the north side by the south side they will attract, but if you put the north side by another north side on another magnet they will repel. Same if you put the south side by another south side of another magnet. Magnets can atract lots of types of metal but they can’t attract aluminium (like cans). You can get magnets in lots of sizes and some are stronger than others. Most Magnets are in the shape of a horse shoe and some are just a stick! Magnets can also atract things in water. Layton

Magnetic Madness
How it works is if you put north and north it will repel and if you do the same to south then you
will see that it is repelling and if you put north and south it will get stuck together. I enjoyed it
was very cool. by Prajith
